Britain may be scaling back its nuclear plans. The chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has ordered a review of government investment in nuclear power, we report today. Under 2021 spending plans, up to £1.7 billion of funding was made available for the construction of new nuclear plants.

Those who support such spending say it is essential if the UK is to have energy security and stick to its commitments on carbon emissions. Its opponents argue that nuclear power is expensive, plants are subject to lengthy delays and the money would be better spent on expanding green alternatives such as wind, solar and storage technology.
