Members and supporters of CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) groups in North Cumbria, South Lakeland and Lancaster District joined other Stop the War campaigners at a rally on the afternoon of Sunday 6 March.

They condemned Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, particularly the bombing and shelling of civilians.

They highlighted the enormous risks inherent in attacks on nuclear power stations and expressed strong solidarity with anti-war protesters in Russia.

They displayed placards based on those carried by the many protesters arrested in Moscow and St Petersberg which read ‘HET BONHE’ (No War).

South Lakeland and Lancaster District CND Spokerson, Patricia Gilligan said,

“CND stands squarely with all those in Russia and beyond who have protested against the invasion of Ukraine. We join them in calling for an immediate and total ceasefire and for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.

"It is essential that we condemn military aggression wherever it occurs and whoever is the perpetrator.

"We call for humanitarian aid and a welcome for refugees, and urge our Government and others to pursue diplomatic solutions rather than military escalation.

"It is essential that we show our support for peace in the world and halt the drift towards potential disaster."
