Stop Sizewell C and Together Against Sizewell C protesters take their campaign to the streets of London

Campaigners from Suffolk fighting against the proposed Sizewell C development took their protest to the streets of London to highlight their opposition.

Stop Sizewell C and Together Against Sizewell C protesters gathered outside of Downing Street and placed adverts at underground stations to flag the Government's 'green-washing'.

The Secretary of State for Business, energy and industrial strategy, Kwasi Kwarteng, will decide by May 25 whether the plans for the power station should be approved.

Mr Karteng has previously given his backing to the project, saying it was important to 'ensure Britain's future energy supply is bolstered by reliable, affordable, low carbon power'.

Protesters held banners saying 'Sizewell C is not green' and 'we'll all pay', in protests against the government's new nuclear tax.

The group also gathered outside of the annual general meeting (AGM) of Aviva at Westminster's Queen Elizabeth II Centre. The group handed out leaflets which said 'Aviva, back renewables not Sizewell C', after concerns were raised that they could invest in the development.

Alison Downes, of Stop Sizewell C, said: “We’ve come to Whitehall and Aviva’s AGM to send a message that Sizewell C does not merit either political or financial support.

"The poor track record of EDF’s EPR reactor - massively delayed and overspent wherever it has been built and offline in China for the last nine months with fuel failure and vibration problems - should sound Sizewell C’s death knell.”

Chris Wilson, of Together Against Sizewell C, added: “Sizewell C is too slow, risky and expensive to help our climate and energy emergency, and it is certainly not green, threatening protected habitats and marine wildlife and with no guaranteed, sustainable water supply."
