Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe with a population of more than 40 million people. It is bordered by Russia, Belarus, Slovakia, Poland, Romania and Moldova. Ukraine officially declared itself independent on August 24, 1991, when its parliament announced it would no longer follow the laws of the USSR. In February 2022, Russia launched a military invasion of Ukraine which had been building up since early 2021. The ongoing conflict has caused thousands of Ukrainian civilian deaths and hundreds of thousands of military casualties.
