National CND demonstration outside RAF Lakenheath gates on Saturday

A demonstration to protest against the return of US nuclear bombs to Britain will be held at RAF Lakenheath on Saturday.

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) national demonstration will be held at the gates of the base from 1-3pm, with hundreds of supporters from across the country expected.

The action follows reports underground nuclear storage bunkers at RAF Lakenheath would be included in a multi-million dollar upgrade programme by the US Department of Defense.

The CND said it was thought the work was in preparation for the return of US nuclear weapons to the base, after their removal in 2008 due to sustained protest.

The US is the only country which sites its nuclear weapons outside its own borders.

Saturday's demonstration will be joined by peace activists from Europe who organise against the same type of US nuclear bombs being hosted in their own country.

The presence of the bombs could make the host bases a nuclear target.
